Are Small Dogs Better For An Apartment?

bedThe short answer to this question is it depends…small dogs can be better in some ways yet there is no reason that you can’t have a large dog in an apartment.

First off apartment complexes tend to be very picking about whether they allow dogs or not. What I have found in addition to this is even if they allow dogs they likely do not allow dogs over a certain weight limit and that weight limit tends to be around 40 pounds or less.

However if you can find an apartment that will take a large dog there is no reason that it won’t work out well unless you don’t exercise your dog. The amount of exercise needed depends on the dog of course. But if you have a larger dog it’s important to exercise them so they don’t get bored and make up there own “games” which may involve ripping up the carpeting and other things that are not cool for you or for your landlord for that matter.

Keep in mind also that if you have a small physical floor plan you may be stepping over or around your larger dog a lot more than you would a smaller dog. I found this to be very true when I had a small studio apartment and a German Shepherd. I was constantly asking her to move so that I could get up and walk anywhere in the apartment. If having a walk around your dog will drive you crazy I would highly recommend getting a small dog.
